ZERO TOLERANCE FOR WORKING WEAPONS AT ANIME EXPO®.

You may not carry or possess any working weapon, openly or concealed, at any time at or around the convention space, including the parking lots. Working weapons, firearms, curio or relic or antique firearms, and all forms of ammunition are strictly forbidden. “Working Weapons” include, but are not limited to: firearms and ammunition of any and all sorts, rifles, shotguns, hand guns, BB guns, pellet guns, cap guns, air-soft weapons, paintball guns, blow guns, tazers, explosives, knives, swords (including katana and other martial arts style swords), daggers, sword canes, switchblades, bali-song (butterfly) knives, axes, hatchets, pole arms, staffs, clubs, wooden or metal bats and paddles, bows, arrows, martial arts weapons, brass knuckles, chains, whips, pepper spray, mace, and any projectile item, toy or real, whether or not such Working Weapon is loaded, broken, or then-currently in firing or useable condition.

Even items that may be legal to own or carry are not welcome at Anime Expo®. Please leave them at home.

Weapons purchased at Anime Expo® must be kept wrapped and then immediately removed from the premises following purchase. Unwrapping or brandishing of weapons bought from Anime Expo®, on convention grounds or in parking lots, is considered a violation of the Zero Tolerance Policy for Working Weapons. Attendees found in violation may be subjected to expulsion from Anime Expo®.

Laser pointers, laser-aiming devices, or similar devices, may not be used in public, unless you are officially sanctioned to lead or present a convention seminar, workshop, display, or other convention-sanctioned event in which a laser is needed.

Access Control Approval & Peace Bonding

All Prop Weapons and Futuristic Replicas (as described below) must be submitted to Access Control for approval. If approved, the Prop Weapon or Futuristic Replica may be Peace Bonded at the sole discretion of the management of Anime Expo®. This designation may be revoked at any time at the discretion of the management of Anime Expo®, for reasons including, but not limited to, the item being used or brandished in an inappropriate fashion or if complaints are received regarding its display. Weapons which are not approved will not be Peace Bonded and may not be carried, possessed, or displayed at Anime Expo®. Carrying, possessing, or displaying weapons which are not Peace Bonded is a violation of the Weapons Policy and may result in the individual being expelled from Anime Expo®.

“Peace Bonded” means an Access Control-approved weapon is visibly secured by Anime Expo® personnel so that it cannot be drawn or used. Removing or tampering with the device(s) used by Access Control to designate Peace Bonding is a violation of the Weapons Policy. Anyone who violates this policy may be expelled from Anime Expo®.

Anime Expo® requires that any Prop Weapon or Futuristic Replica must be Peace Bonded so that there is no chance for a dangerous part of the weapon to inadvertently come into contact with other attendees or contestants.

  1. Prop Weapons: “Prop Weapons” may be carried during the convention, provided that you comply with the following restrictions. “Prop Weapons” are homemade or commercially rendered costume props that support the overall look of a costume or character. Exposed metal is only allowed on the handle of a prop, provided that it conforms to the requirements set forth in this Weapons Policy. Metal-bladed Prop Weapons, which include any display of live steel, or Prop Weapons which may present a danger to others, may not be displayed. No props may have any sharp edges or sharp pointed tips. No items over seven (7) feet in any direction or weighing over fifteen (15) lbs will be allowed. Water guns, squirt guns, and non-functional toy guns (toy guns that do not launch any form of projectile) will only be approved if they are one of the following colors: white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple; either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern; or are transparent or translucent. Water guns and squirt guns must remain empty. Filling them with any substance will be considered a violation of the Peace Bonding requirements. Prop Weapons are to be displayed only as costume pieces. Prop Weapons are not allowed to be swung, jabbed, thrust, or actively used on the convention grounds or in parking lots. Doing so can injure others and create unsafe situations. Anyone brandishing a Prop Weapon will be asked to remove it from Anime Expo®. You may pose with a Prop Weapon in a brandishing manner, so long as no reasonable person would interpret the posed brandishing as anything but a pose for dramatic effect, and so long as the pose is not done in anger, as part of a quarrel, or as a real threat. Such posed brandishing may be stopped at the sole and absolute discretion of Anime Expo® security or staff members.
  2. Futuristic Replicas: Futuristic Replicas of non-existent weapons may be displayed, provided that they are immediately and obviously recognizable as such. Examples include phasers, ray guns, or light-sabers. Light-sabers with a metal base are permitted, but are subject to the same rules, regulations, and penalties in regards to metal and brandishing set out above. Such replicas are subject to the same material and color restrictions as “Prop Weapons” above.
  3. Martial Arts Performances & Demos: Persons giving martial arts performances or demonstrations that are officially sanctioned in advance by the management of Anime Expo® may display working martial arts weapons during, and thirty (30) minutes before and after the demonstrations or performances, only. Those weapons must be used so as to avoid harm to persons or property. These martial arts weapons must be transported to and from the performance or demonstration area in cases or wrapped, and must be removed from the convention premises immediately following the performances or demonstrations. Anime Expo® reserves the right to stop any performance or demonstration at its sole or absolute discretion.

COSTUMES THAT MAY BE CONFUSED WITH LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OR OTHER EMERGENCY RESPONSE PERSONNEL UNIFORMS ARE NOT PERMITTED AT ANIME EXPO®.

Anime Expo® reserves the right to determine whether a uniform costume is permitted or too close to a real world uniform at its sole and absolute discretion, and to ask an attendee who is wearing a costume that is too close to a real world uniform to adjust it or remove it, and in the event the attendee does not cooperate with that request, Anime Expo® may expel the person from the convention.

INSPECTIONS MUST BE PERMITTED IN ORDER TO CONTINUE ATTENDANCE

In order to protect their own safety and that of others, Anime Expo® attendees understand, agree to, and consent that designated Anime Expo® representatives or security personnel throughout Anime Expo® have an absolute right to inspect costumes, weapons, and any other items, and that they will submit to such an inspection. Any attendee must submit their costumes, weapons, and other items to an immediate inspection upon request or must leave the convention. In the event a person declines to submit to an inspection and refuses to leave, they shall be immediately expelled from the convention and escorted off the premises.

Only Anime Expo® may determine whether any particular item covered by this policy is permitted or not permitted at Anime Expo® and such determination is solely, exclusively, and absolutely at the discretion of Anime Expo®. Persons who do not cooperate with the determinations of Anime Expo® concerning the application of this policy to any particular item may be immediately expelled from the convention. If it is later discovered that a person brought a working weapon to any current or prior year Anime Expo®, that person may be banned from attending future conventions.

PERSONS WHO CARRY OR OTHERWISE BRING PROP WEAPONS, FUTURISTIC REPLICAS, OR SIMILAR ITEMS DO SO AT THEIR OWN, SOLE, AND ABSOLUTE RISK, AND ASSUME ALL RISKS OF LIABILITY, HARM, DAMAGE, OR LOSS TO ANY PERSON OR PROPERTY INJURED OR OTHERWISE HARMED, INTENTIONALLY OR ACCIDENTLY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY BY SUCH ITEMS OR THE PERSON CARRYING THEM. SPJA IS AND SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INJURY, HARM, DAMAGE, OR OTHER RISK OR LIABILITY ASSOCIATED WITH ANY PERSON’S USE OF ANY WEAPON, REPLICA, OR PROP, WHETHER PERMITTED OR BANNED HEREUNDER, AT ANIME EXPO®. IN NO EVENT SHALL ANIME EXPO®, SPJA AND ITS AFFILIATES AND SUBSIDIARIES, OR THE LOS ANGELES CONVENTION CENTER HAVE ANY LIABILITY FOR ANY INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES HEREUNDER, EVEN IF INFORMED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SAME.
